Deborah Ellis was born and raised in Ontario, Canada and since the age of seventeen she has been a political activitist, advocating nonviolence, women's rights, and economic justice. She currently works in toronto as a mental health counselor. Before writing The Breadwinner, Ellis spent seveal months in Afghan refugee camps, interviewing women and girls to document their lives. Her experiences inspired her to write the Breadwinner and two other books in the trilogy: Parvanna's Journey and Shauzia. All the royalities from the Breadwinner are being donated to the education of Afghan gilrs in the refugee camps in Pakistan. Pre- Reading Activities:

  • Read the author's note on page 167
  • To whom is the book dedicated? What might this dedication have to do with the main idea of the story?
  • Look at the Glossary. Make sure you know the difference between a burqa and a chador. Which is more restrictive?
